The history of Nagambie Primary School

  • 1870s

    The school, originally known as Goulburn Valley, opened as a common school in 1870.

    The first head teacher was H.G. Clayton and attendance was 25.

    Classes were held in a rented building described as a ‘wretched little building'. A brick school building was finished in 1871.

    Nagambie was recognised as a common school in 1872. The school became a state school in the late 1870s.

  • 1880

    The Mechanics Hall was rented by the school in 1880.

  • 1885

    A new school building was finished in 1885. It was opened by G. Hall, the Member of Parliament for Moira.

  • 1891

    In 1891 the teacher's house was completed.

  • 1895

    Trees were first planted in the grounds in 1895.

  • 1904

    An unused school, Prairie State School (No. 1981), was moved to Nagambie.

    This provided extra accommodation. It later became a sloyd room (a room used for woodworking) but was eventually destroyed by fire.

  • 1910

    Two new rooms were added and enrolment had reached 201.

  • 1970

    The school changed its name to Nagambie Primary School in 1970 when 115 were enrolled.

    The school observed its 150th anniversary in 2021.

  • 2022

    Nagambie Primary School is still in operation.
