The history of Porepunkah Primary School

  • 1873

    Porepunkah opened as a common school in 1873. The first head teacher was McLaughan and there were 62 students enrolled.

  • 1875

    The school became a state school in 1875.

  • 1910s

    At some stage between 1910 and 1915 a new school building was added.

  • 1920s

    Land for a pine plantation was purchased in 1924 to raise funds for the school. It was planted in 1925.

  • 1941

    The school building added in 1910 was moved to a better site at the school and renovated. It became a visual education room.

  • 1951

    Electricity was connected in 1951.

  • 1955

    The pine plantation was milled in 1955 and the school received the profits. Another classroom was built that year.

  • 1963

    A classroom, office and storeroom were added in 1963.

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Porepunkah Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

    Porepunkah Primary School is still in operation.
