The history of Sorrento Primary School

  • 1870s

    Sorrento opened as a common school in 1871. The first head teacher was W.R. Sheppard and 31 students were enrolled. There was a Church of England school in the area between 1855 and 1861. The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878. 
     

  • 1890

    A new school building opened in 1890. The old school building was used as the teacher's residence.

  • 1925

    The school moved to a new building on a new site. When enrolment increased junior classes were held at St John's Hall. This site then became Sorrento Township State School (No. 4115). 
     

  • 1970

    The school was renamed Sorrento Primary School in 1970.

  • 2022

    Sorrento Primary School is still in operation.
