About the school directory
The school directory includes over 6,000 Victorian government schools, from the 1840s to today.
Use this page to understand what information is included in each listing, where it comes from, and why some schools have more detail than others.
What information you'll see in each listing
Every school listing includes:
- school name
- school number
- school type
- school status
- the time period the school was open.
Some listings may also include:
- other names the school used
- open and close dates
- the location of the school's records
- additional historical details.
Current schools also include:
- address
- phone number.
About the location of school records
In the past, records for open schools were usually kept at the school. Records for closed schools were transferred to the Department of Education.
The School Records Reform Program (SRRP) is a Department of Education initiative. It aims to collect permanent and long-term temporary records from Victorian government schools.
This is a 3-year program, and collections are ongoing.
As records are collected, school directory listings are updated to show:
- where the records are now held
- any specific information that has been found about the records.
Where the directory information comes from
The directory is based on:
- Department of Education school data
- the 3-volume 1972 publication Vision and Realisation: A centenary history of state education in Victoria.
Why some schools have more details
Some of the oldest schools include more detailed historical profiles.
In 2022, over 400 schools were researched as part of the 150-year anniversary of public education in Victoria.
These profiles may include:
- timelines
- photos
- links to school records at the Public Record Office Victoria.
You can recognise these schools immediately by the page title as they display the school number in brackets.
For example, Addington Primary School (No. 226) was created for the 150-year celebration and includes more details, whereas Aintree Primary School - Number 5575 is a standard directory listing page.
