About the Bonegilla Migrant Centre and its school - Bonegilla Migrant Education Centre Special School No. 4634
The Bonegilla Migrant Centre opened in 1947. It was the first temporary accommodation for many migrants to Australia.
Bonegilla Migrant Education Centre Special School No. 4634 opened on 5 February 1952. The school was necessary due to the increase in immigration after the Second World War and the growing number of children arriving at the centre.
When the school was established it had 150 students. By the end of 1952 the school had 483 students. Over the period in which the school was operating, the number of pupils fluctuated widely.
Children of over 44 different nationalities were admitted to the school. Most of these children did not speak English.
The school and the migrant centre closed in 1971.
You can view the school's entry in the online version of Vision and Realisation: a centenary history of state education in Victoria. Access this publication online at the State Library of Victoria at https://shorturl.at/u4BjG. You should find the record for this specific school in volume 3, on page 1027.
