The history of Geelong Primary School

  • 1870s

    Geelong was established by the Presbyterian Church of Little Malop Street.

    The Board of Education approved the school when the Government granted land to the church.

    The foundation stone was laid in 1870 by the Hon. John Cumming, MLC.

    The school was opened in 1871 and was called the Geelong East New Vested School.

    The original school building had a two-room teacher's house and a porch. It was located at the north-west corner of the school site.

      • Hodge
      • Appleby
      • Reeves
  • 1900s

    In the early 1900s the school building comprised two levels and a south wing.

    Each room was divided by screens on metal rings.

  • 1912

    A north wing was added and new flooring installed.

  • 1950s

    From 1957 to 1959 student support staff were appointed.

    This included two speech therapists and two psychologists.

  • 1960s

    The school was under renovation from 1967 to 1968.

    The renovations included:

    • new toilet blocks
    • replacement of an old slate roof with tiles
    • installation of fireproof doors
    • blocking up chimneys
    • removal of platforms in classrooms
    • new water supply
    • installation of drinking fountains.
  • 1993

    The school closed. The building was sold to the Geelong Hospital.
