How to run an industry or community taster

Tasters are short, hands-on learning sessions that let students experience different industries and job skills. They could be run at a workplace, schools, or other venues to help students explore future career options.

Year 9 or 10 – industry or community taster

This one or two-day session gives students the chance to try real industry activities and learn about a range of job types. It helps them understand different career options, build confidence, and develop basic skills.

Planning and preparation

  • Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to start planning
  • Choose suitable date/s and times for your taster program
  • Work with the school to organise students and venue details
  • Create practical learning tasks that reflect your industry’s work
  • Prepare short promotional information for schools and students
  • Plan for transport, supervision, and timetables that suit schools
  • Follow all Child Safe Standards, safety rules (OH&S), and department policies
  • Include a short feedback and evaluation process to measure success
  • Be ready to provide public liability insurance details to schools if needed

Preparing your staff

  • Brief all staff on program goals and their role in supporting students
  • Check staff have a Working with Children Check (if required)
  • Give a short induction covering safety, behaviour, and learning goals
  • Assign clear roles such as presenter, supervisor, or workshop leader

A quality experience for all

  • Give students practical, real-world tasks using industry tools or equipment
  • Support students at different skill levels with clear instructions
  • Encourage questions and conversations about jobs and careers
  • Keep the environment safe, welcoming, and inclusive
  • Record student attendance and engagement

After the taster

  • Collect feedback from students, teachers, and staff
  • Review results and find ways to improve future programs
  • Stay connected with schools and training partners to plan future tasters
  • Share outcomes with your organisation to show the value of participation
