How to host a career expo

Career expos are short events where students find out about different jobs. They meet workers and learn what real workplaces are like.

Career expo

A small construction company runs a booth at a career expo for Year 10–12 students. Staff talk about trade careers and apprenticeships. They bring tools, equipment and PPE for display, demonstrated or for use. Students can ask questions and explore jobs they might want to do. This activity requires a small amount of time and preparation.

How to get involved

Planning and preparation

  • Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to get started.
  • Set your goals: Decide what students should learn, such as job pathways or workplace safety.
  • Confirm details: Year level and number of students.
  • Select the activity type: Expo.
  • Date and time: This will be based on what suits your staff and the school.
  • Plan logistics: Space, equipment, safety gear and any presentations.
  • Coordinate with the school: Confirm expectations and student requirements.

Preparing your staff

  • Brief staff: Explain the purpose of the activity and who the students are.
  • Assign roles: Select presenters (all genders and if possible young employees), tour guides or workshop helpers.
  • Prepare student materials: Slides, videos, handouts or demonstrations.
  • Plan engagement: Encourage staff to talk with students and share career advice

Delivery – providing a quality experience

  • Welcome students: Give a short introduction about your business.
  • Career information: Tell students about jobs in your industry.
  • Run a tour or demonstration: Show real work areas or tools.
  • Encourage questions: If safe, let students try basic activities.
  • Follow safety rules: Students need to understand this side of the business.

After the activity

  • Collect feedback: From staff and students.
  • Thank you: Both the school and volunteers.
  • Review event: Work out what worked well and plan improvements.
  • Share outcomes: Promote success stories with your local community.
