2019 Report

The SOVC 2019 report draws on available data and research to investigate the outcomes for Aboriginal children and young people living in Victoria, including their health, social and emotional wellbeing, and engagement with education and post-school pathways, as well as the social and historical context in which these outcomes occur.

The report also provides information on relevant government initiatives and on the services and experiences of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) and their clients.

The report identifies several measures on which Aboriginal children and young people are doing well, and where there have been significant long-term improvements. Examples include engagement with early years services, increasing completions of Year 12 or equivalent qualifications, and declining rates of Aboriginal young people under Youth Justice supervision.

Other measures highlight areas of ongoing concern, including higher rates of developmental vulnerability and disability, high representation in out-of-home care, and frequently reported experiences of psychological distress.

The SOVC 2019 report features artworks by Aboriginal children and young people generously provided by ACCOs and the community, including participants in the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA) Art Mentoring Program.
