All government schools must participate in AtoSS, providing the opportunity for students from Year 4 to Year 12 to complete the survey. The survey provides data that helps the department understand student perspectives of their school and to improve the schooling experience.
Data collected includes how students feel in relation to their school, their learning, peer relationships, resilience, bullying, health and wellbeing, physical activity, and life in general.
AtoSS is aligned with the department’s Framework for Improving Student Outcomes 2.0. Data from the survey are used to inform school improvement and planning to support student learning and wellbeing.
2025 key findings
In 2025, over 380,000 Victorian students in Years 4 to 12 from 1,541 schools participated in AtoSS, representing 85% of eligible students.
Key findings
- 2025 AtoSS continued the improvements seen across most survey factors in 2024. Nearly all survey factors improved for primary school students (94%), but early secondary years saw the greatest improvements with 97% of survey factors improving for Years 7 to 9. In years 10 to 12, 91% of survey factors improved.
- There were gains across the board for effective teaching practice and teacher-student relations.
- This year saw significant improvements in all stages of schooling compared to recent years, with some of the largest improvements in health and wellbeing factors. The biggest improvements were in life satisfaction, online safety and school responses to bullying.
- The latest results show that students are feeling safer, more supported and have a stronger sense of belonging at their school.
- Students are also reporting greater resilience, improved physical health and easier access to health services. Secondary school students had the largest overall gains.
- Fewer students reported experiencing bullying, and most students felt that a teacher was looking out for them at their school. Most students do not experience bullying or racism at school.
