October is Cyber Security Awareness Month - a global initiative that helps us all take simple steps to stay safe online.

Here in Victoria, it's a chance to build a stronger cyber safe culture across our community. Whether you're checking your banking, paying bills, or connecting with friends, a few quick actions can help make a big difference.

1. Install software updates to keep your devices secure

Updates aren't just about new features - they close the gaps that hackers use to get in. Turn on automatic updates in your settings to keep your phone, computer and apps secure.

2. Create strong and unique passphrases for every account

It's tempting to use the same password for multiple accounts. But if one account gets hacked, others could too.

Try switching to a passphrase. A passphrase is 4 or more random words that are easy to remember but hard to guess, like Monkey River Guitar Sunset. The longer you make it, the better.

3. Always set up multi-factor authentication

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds another layer of security to your accounts.

Combining a strong passphrase with proof it's you, like a scan of your face or fingerprint, or a one-time code sent to your device, helps you stay safe online.

Start by turning on MFA for your most important accounts, like your email and online banking.

Where to find help

If you spot a scam, report it to Scamwatch. If money has been lost or a crime has been committed, report it to ReportCyber.

Learn more about how to identify a scam via our Stay safe online website or use our quick scam check to see the warning signs.

It's also important to talk about how to be cyber secure with family, friends and colleagues, and to share your story if you've been caught in a scam. Your cyber security story could help others.
