The razzle dazzle of the Melbourne Royal Show has faded for another year. While the rides, competitions, and fun are now cherished memories, many showbags continue to entertain.
But behind the show's sparkle, our dedicated team from Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) was hard at work helping to keep showgoers safe. Their work included inspecting showbags before the show's opening and monitoring stalls during the 11-day event.
Watch our product safety team in action during preparation for one of the biggest community events of the year.
In the lead-up to the show they checked 320 showbags. Their mission? To identify and remove any items that could pose a risk or fail to meet Australia's mandatory safety and information standards.
Most products passed with flying colours. However, the team found 15 items that were either unsafe or non-compliant. These were removed or modified where appropriate.
Among the most concerning finds:
- Button battery items: a number of products contained unsecured button batteries, which pose a serious health risk to children and other vulnerable people, if swallowed.
- Yo-yo balls: 100 of these banned toys, known for their potential strangulation risk, were seized and removed.
- Cosmetic products: some fake tattoos and make up were found without ingredient labels. This is a legal requirement for all cosmetics sold in Australia.
