The School of Mines Ballarat opened in 1871.

1913 – Ballarat Junior Technical School opened as the secondary schooling part of School of Mines Ballarat (SMB).

Officially the school was part of SMB and often appears as SMB Junior Technical School in official papers. However, locally the school was known as Ballarat Junior Technical School.

Name change in 1950s: The school became known as Ballarat Technical School No. 7020.

Merger in 1977: Ballarat Technical School No. 7020 detached from SMB and merged with Ballarat Girls High School to become Ballarat Technical High School No. 7267. This in turn became Mount Clear Secondary College in 1990 and Mount Clear College in 2001.

Merger: In 1977, The Ballarat School of Mines became a part of Federation University Australia.
