Free disposal of bushfire and storm waste

The Victorian Government is supporting communities to recover from the bushfires and storms that occurred on 13 February 2024 and the Bayindeen-Rocky Road bushfire commencing on 22 February 2024.

Until 30 April 2024, residents from these disaster-impacted Local Government Areas can dispose of waste free of charge at local transfer stations or statewide landfill sites.

How and where can I take my bushfire and storm waste?

Find your closest transfer station or landfill using the waste and recycling infrastructure map - https://www.vic.gov.au/victorias-waste-and-resource-recovery-infrastructure-map.

Check in advance that the transfer station or landfill is operating and accepts the waste you have. Some services may have been affected by the bushfires and storms and may not be operating as normal.

How do I claim the free waste disposal?

Show proof of identity such as a driver’s licence, and proof of residence in an impacted LGA such as a rates notice to access free waste disposal.

How long is free waste disposal available?

Until 30 April 2024, residents from LGAs impacted by the bushfires and storms on 13 February 2024 and the Bayindeen-Rocky Road bushfire on 22 February 2024 can dispose of disaster waste at local transfer stations or any landfill statewide free of charge.

What is disaster waste?

The current gate fee waiver and waste levy exemption relates to emergency events on 13 February 2024 or the Bayindeen-Rocky Road bushfire on 22 February 2024 and applies to any material:

  • deposited on a property by these emergency events.
  • damaged by these emergency events.
