Victorians who are recovering from the Summer 2026 bushfires can now safely dispose of their disaster waste free of charge.
A $5 million Victorian Government investment will cover the waste levy and gate fees so that residents can dispose of their disaster waste at their eligible local landfill, composting facility or transfer station – until 12 May.
Disaster waste must have originated in the following local government areas, providing proof of address like a driver’s licence or recent rate notice:
- Alpine Shire Council transfer station
- Ararat Rural City Council transfer station
- Colac Otway Shire Council transfer station
- Corangamite Shire Council transfer station
- East Gippsland Shire Council transfer station
- Golden Plains Shire Council transfer station

Find your closest landfill, transfer station (Resource Recovery Centre) or composting facility (Reprocessor) on Victoria's waste and resource recovery infrastructure map.
Please refer to your local government websites for information on council transfer stations' operating hours, addresses, and waste acceptance.
Composting
If you want to dispose of organic waste at a composting facility, please contact your nearest facility to confirm that your waste can be accepted at their site.
Below is a list of the types of clean streams of organics that composting facilities are usually able to accept:
- unpackaged food waste
- garden waste (if the material is shredded)
- green waste (if unshredded the material must be no longer than 1.8 metres and diameter 200 mm).
Please note that composting facilities can only accept disaster waste that is clean and free from contamination. For example, garden waste must be separate from food waste, and neither should include any non-organic items (such as plastics or cardboard).
Composting facilities are only able to receive disaster waste from commercial operators/business as they are unable to accommodate smaller vehicles (for example, small trailer trucks).
Below is a list of composting facilities able to take free disaster waste:
| Name | Suburb and local government area |
|---|---|
| BioGro | Newbridge, Loddon Shire |
| Biomix | Stanhope, Campaspe Shire |
| Elmore Composting Organics | Elmore, Greater City Bendigo |
| Gippsland Regional Organics | Dutson Downs, East Gippsland Shire |
| SOILCO | Lethbridge, Golden Plains Shire |
