Safe roads and speeds

Motorcyclist crashes happen in a diverse range of locations across the network. These include complex urban intersections, isolated winding rural roads, scenic coastal and mountain roads, and unsealed roads and tracks – each posing different hazards and risks.

Motorcycles are particularly susceptible to road hazards and adverse conditions, while roads are not always maintained with optimal safety for motorcyclists in mind.

We will prioritise investment in evidence-based road safety treatments at locations of greatest need, guided by risk and road trauma data.

The unique nature and needs of motorcycles also need to be considered in all aspects of transport policy and future transport planning.

What we’re doing
- Delivering the Gippsland Trail Bike Safety Pilot and the Trail Bike Safety Program and continue research efforts to strengthen trail bike rider safety.
- Implementing DTP’s new Fatal Crash Review process to provide greater understanding of the systemic risks and crash and injury causation factors on the arterial road network.
- Trialling Perceptual Countermeasures (PCMs) on high-risk curves to understand their effectiveness as innovative and cost-effective safety treatments.
What we will do
- Deliver the $40 million Motorcycle Safety Infrastructure Program to roll out motorcycle safety treatments across the state.
- Explore options to trial motorcycle friendly treatments to uplift the safety of urban corridors in metropolitan Melbourne that present a high risk to motorcyclists.
- Collect the latest data on motorcycle traffic volumes and use this to update motorcycle route information to guide investment under future road safety infrastructure programs.
What we’re doing
- Seeking rider feedback on safe and unsafe locations through a new map-based rider safety engagement survey.
- Delivering the Motorcycle Enhanced Maintenance Scheme (MEMS) Trial.
- Delivering training to those who plan, design, construct, operate and maintain Victorian roads to embed the Making Roads Motorcycle Friendly Guide and uplift practitioners’ understanding of motorcyclist needs.
What we will do
- Update existing policy for motorcycles using bus lanes, informed by the evaluation findings of the motorcycles in bus lanes trial in Victoria.
- Draw on the findings of the Motorcycle Enhanced Maintenance Scheme Trial to inform future enhanced road maintenance approaches.
- Strengthen consideration of the unique needs of motorcycles in asset management strategies and policies.
- Strengthen consideration for motorcyclists in the Movement and Place Framework through a new Guidance Note.
- Update the Making Roads Motorcycle Friendly Guide to incorporate the latest evidence.
