Values of MP salaries and allowances from 1 July 2022

The basic salary payable to an MP is $192,115 per annum.

Electorate allowance
The electorate allowance per annum is:
- if the electorate is less than 500 square kilometres: $42,155
- if the electorate is 500 square kilometres or more but less than 5,000 square kilometres: $45,771
- if the electorate is than 5000 square kilometres or more: $50,499

Parliamentary accommodation sitting allowance
The Tribunal's MP Guidelines specify eligibility criteria for claiming the parliamentary accommodation sitting allowance.
The parliamentary accommodation sitting allowance per annum, for an eligible MP is:
- if the MP is the Premier: $53,217
- if the MP is the Deputy Premier: $46,565
- if the MP is any other Minister of the Crown, the Presiding or Deputy Presiding Officer, Cabinet Secretary, Leader or Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Leader or Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Leader or Deputy Leader of the Third Party: $39,910
- if the MP is none of the above: $26,609
Motor vehicle allowance
The motor vehicle allowance per annum for an MP who does not elect to be provided with a motor vehicle under section 6(6) of the Parliamentary Salaries, Allowances and Superannuation Act 1968 (Vic) is:
- if the electorate is less than 5,000 square kilometres: $22,353
- if the electorate is 5,000 square kilometres or more: $33,680

Travel allowance
The Tribunal's MP Guidelines specify eligibility criteria for claiming the travel allowance.
The maximum travel allowance per night for an MP is the travelling allowance rate set by the Commonwealth Remuneration as the travel allowance for an overnight stay in commercial accommodation in a particular location.
If the MP is the Premier, Deputy Premier, other Minister of the Crown, Presiding Officer or the Leader of the Opposition, the maximum travel allowance payable is the travelling allowance rate for an office holder of the Parliament of the Commonwealth, as set by the Commonwealth Remuneration Tribunal.
Commercial transport allowance
The Tribunal's MP Guidelines specify eligibility criteria for claiming the commercial transport allowance.
The commercial transport allowance per annum for an MP is:
- if the electorate is less than 10,000 square kilometres: $5,000
- if the electorate is 10,000 square kilometres or more but less than 20,000 square kilometres: $10,971
- if the electorate is 20,000 square kilometres or more: $17,226

International travel allowance
The Tribunal's MP Guidelines specify eligibility criteria for claiming the international travel allowance.
The international travel allowance per annum for an MP is $10,080.

The Electorate Office and Communications Budget for an MP who is a Member of the Legislative Assembly is (to the nearest dollar) the sum of:
- total number of voters enrolled in Victoria (as last published by the Victorian Electoral Commission as at the last day of February in the previous financial year), divided by 88, multiplied by $0.92, multiplied by 1.044 and
- the total number of voters enrolled in the electoral district that the Member represents (as last published by the Victorian Electoral Commission as at the last day of February of the previous financial year) multiplied by $1.22, multiplied by 1.044.
The Electorate Office and Communications Budget for an MP who is a Member of the Legislative Council is (to the nearest dollar) the total number of voters enrolled in Victoria (as last published by the Victorian Electoral Commission as at the last day of February in the previous financial year), divided by 88, multiplied by $2.14, multiplied by 1.044.
Special rules apply for calculating the value of the Electorate Office and Communications Budget for a financial year in which a general election for the Parliament of Victoria is held. View clause 16.2 of the consolidated version of the Determinations for further information.
Determination in effect
On 16 September 2019, and in accordance with section 17 of the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal and Improving Parliamentary Standards Act 2019 (VIRTIPS Act), the Tribunal made the Members of Parliament (Victoria) Determination 01/2019.
The Tribunal's Determination set the value of the following salaries and allowances:
- basic salary
- additional salaries
- any expense allowance
- motor vehicle allowance
- parliamentary accommodation sitting allowance
- travel allowance
- commercial transport allowance
- international travel allowance
- electorate allowance
- Electorate Office and Communications Budget
The Determination also set the value of the ‘basic salary portion' for the financial year ending 30 June 2020 that is, the basic salary for the purpose of section 10(1) of the Parliamentary Salaries, Allowances and Superannuation Act (Vic) (PSAS Act) - as required by the VIRTIPS Act (s17(5)(b)). The Tribunal does not have the power to make any further adjustments to the basic salary portion, rather it is adjusted by the formula set out in section 10(1) of the PSAS Act.
The Tribunal is required to make an annual adjustment to the value of salaries and allowances.
The latest annual adjustment Determination is the Members of Parliament (Victoria) Annual Adjustment Determination 2022, effective from 1 July 2022.
The Tribunal has published a Notice of Intention to make a new Determination setting the values of salaries, work-related parliamentary allowances and the Electorate Office and Communications Budget for Members of Parliament of Victoria. The Determination must be made by 20 June 2023. Once in effect, the Determination will supersede the Tribunal’s Members of Parliament (Victoria) Determination No. 01/2019 (as amended by annual adjustments made in 2020, 2021 and 2022).

Guidelines in effect
Under section 36 of the VIRTIPS Act, the Tribunal has the power to make guidelines for, or with respect to, the:
- parliamentary accommodation sitting allowance
- travel allowance
- international travel allowance
- commercial transport allowance
- Electorate Office and Communications Budget
The Tribunal's Guidelines should be read together with the Determination in effect at the time.
The Guidelines currently in effect are the Members of Parliament (Victoria) Guidelines No. 01/2022, available below.
These Guidelines took effect on 26 November 2022 and reflect changes to electorates that were announced by the Electoral Boundaries Commission in October 2021.
