Recent recruitment of honorary justices

In 2020, the Department of Justice and Community Safety focused on justice of the peace (JP) recruitment in the four local government areas (LGA) of Greater Dandenong, Melton, Hobson’s Bay, and Wyndham. A total of 221 JPs were appointed in these LGAs between 2021 – 2022. 

Using census data, service availability and population growth, DJCS received funding to recruit approximately 800 new JPs in 16 priority LGAs over the next two years. 

The first JP recruitment campaign in late 2021 saw 46 successful appointments in Ballarat and 40 in Greater Geelong. 

In 2022, we appointed: 

  • 33 JPs in Darebin 
  • 49 JPs in Whittlesea 
  • 49 JPs in Frankston 
  • 41 JPs in Latrobe 

In 2023, we appointed: 

  • 60 JPs in Boroondara 
  • 45 JPs in Shepparton 
  • 53 JPs in Merri-bek 
  • 40 JPs in City of Yara 
  • 103 JPs across Western Victoria  

The remaining target areas in 2023 are: 

  • Casey 
  • Yarra Ranges 
  • Maribyrnong 
  • Brimbank
