The first symposium in our Summer Symposium Series - Skills, gender, intersectionality and equity - explored how gender and intersectional disadvantage shape skills development, training pathways and workforce participation in Victoria.
Discussions highlighted the ways factors such as cultural background, disability, caring responsibilities and socio-economic circumstances can combine to create additional barriers for people seeking to access education, training and employment opportunities. This includes women, First Nations Peoples, culturally diverse people, people with disability and other under-represented groups.
Participants identified opportunities for system-wide change through more inclusive workplace and training practices, stronger partnerships between industry and providers, improved data and accountability, and coordinated action across industry, providers and government to create a more equitable skills system.
