The Australian Association of Social Workers amend the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards to require that a ‘working with family violence’ subject be required as a component of the core curriculum in all social work undergraduate degrees.

The Australian Association of Social Workers (the Association) has worked amended the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards to include a 'working with family violence' subject in the core curriculum for all social work undergraduate degrees.
The Association has liaised with all Victorian and Australian higher education providers to promote the development of a 'working with family violence' core curriculum subject and requested universities incorporate appropriate teaching and learning resources into their curricula.

A model core curriculum and guidance for providers has been developed and a national set of standards for qualified social workers (or equivalent) in specialist family violence practice is being finalised.
The model core curriculum for providers and Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) course accreditors was completed and sent to heads of school in April 2018. This supports tertiary providers to include working with family violence content in undergraduate and postgraduate (qualifying) social work courses. The model core curriculum will align with the Family Violence Risk Assessment and Risk Management Framework (MARAM).
Students commencing social work qualifications across Australia from 2019 will have family violence units as part of their core degree requirements.
