There are several reasons why a camera might flash even if you haven’t broken the law.
The camera may flash because:
- it is undergoing testing or maintenance
- it is recording an offence in another lane.
Camera testing and maintenance
Road safety cameras in Victoria are tested and maintained regularly to make sure they work accurately and safely. During maintenance or testing, it is normal for a camera at an intersection to flash, even when an offence has not occurred.

Cameras monitor multiple lanes
Road safety cameras can monitor vehicles in more than one lane at a time. Offences captured by the camera are only issued as fines to the offending vehicle. If an offence occurs in a lane near you, you may see the flash.
