The Victorian Public Service (VPS) recently hosted its first artificial intelligence (AI) Roadshow, bringing together government leaders and AI vendors for a dynamic in-person event.
It was a great opportunity to explore how emerging technologies can support public sector priorities.
Using AI to support government focus areas
The day began with a keynote presentation that addressed current challenges facing government and the role AI could play in addressing them. DGS Deputy Secretary John Batho outlined 6 emerging focus areas for departments across the VPS:
- automation and process efficiencies
- enhanced decision-making
- improved citizen experience
- risk detection
- resource planning
- innovation and capability uplift
This was a unique opportunity to open a dialogue between senior VPS executives and AI vendors on how industry and AI solutions can support the priority areas of government.
Vendor showcase highlights collaboration
In the afternoon, attendees participated in a vendor showcase where VPS executives and subject matter experts engaged directly with AI providers. Booths featured practical demonstrations and solutions tailored to the public sector’s unique challenges.
The showcase reinforced the importance of collaborative problem-solving. It allowed government stakeholders to share pain points while enabling vendors to offer targeted, scalable and compliant innovations.
Vendors highlighted the potential of AI to improve citizen services. For example, through customisable and easily trainable features that can enhance user experience and build public trust.
Vendors also addressed common government concerns, such as regulatory compliance and data privacy. They highlighted measures like local server hosting and advanced encryption to safeguard data.
Looking ahead
While AI adoption in government is complex, the potential benefits are clear. As discussed throughout the day, AI offers promising opportunities to improve services, boost efficiency and strengthen public trust.
The Roadshow served as a starting point for continued collaboration between the VPS and AI industry partners to shape a more innovative and responsive public sector.
