Lauren's story

My name is Lauren. I studied communications. My mob are Kaanju and Wuthathi from up in Cape York, and I grew up in Darwin.

I graduated a couple of years ago now, and I was interested in joining government, but I wasn't quite sure what exactly I wanted to do. So I Googled and I found the grad program and the Aboriginal pathway I was really interested in the opportunity to work across three different departments.

I think the grad program probably exceeded my expectations. It allowed me to work in areas that I never thought I might have an interest in like, I'm working in workforce policy and reform and I'm enjoying it. It's definitely something I could see myself doing in the future.

A highlight for me was attending the Department of Transport Aboriginal Staff Conference. We discussed burnout and how to maintain a work-life balance as an Indigenous person. I was also able to make a bunch of connections with other Indigenous people who work within Department of Transport in a place where I felt culturally safe.

My advice to other grads who are considering applying is to just give the grand program a shot. I've been lucky enough to go into workplaces where I've felt welcomed and felt like my managers really trusted me with the projects I was doing. It's definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, but also being able to actually successfully complete the work that I've been given has been empowering for me.

So I think that was definitely what I'm most proud of.
