Program description

The Drawing to Learn and Learning to Draw program (DLLD program) supports parents, carers, families and educators to engage in drawing activities with preschool children to enhance their learning and development outcomes, particularly as they relate to language development and literacy.

The DLLD program demonstrates, through hands-on activities, information and research, how to use drawing activities to stimulate and extend the development of oral language, shared and imaginary play, social interaction, and literacy generally.

The DLLD program is delivered in 4 packages, which can be bundled together. Some upgrades to the packages are also available.

All packages include:

• Access for kindergarten professionals and families to information resources, including access to the Squiggle Kids Parent Portal with 9 videos, activities and infographics.
• Online or phone pre-meet with the lead educator to confirm arrangements and set up and learn more about the professional team, children and families at the kindergarten.
• An opportunity for online or phone de-brief with lead educator or de-brief survey.
• 30 days of email support for the professional team and parents.

SK Incursion, Professional Training and Resource package

• A 50-minute to one-hour in-person group drawing activity session for up to 15 children facilitated by Squiggle Kids.
• A one-hour professional training session immediately following the group drawing activity session in the kindergarten (or online at a later date) with content designed to help educators implement the Squiggle Kids group drawing approach in the kindergarten.

Optional upgrades (extra costs apply):

• Activity sessions for larger groups of children: activity sessions for up to 22 children.
• Hybrid parent-child activity sessions: parents attend the group drawing activity session and Squiggle Kids includes a presentation about drawing with children, including the latest research and learnings from clinical experience, hints on tools and other tips and tricks.

SK Collaborative Group Drawing Activity and Resource package

Pre-requisite: at least some members of the kindergarten professional team must have already completed Squiggle Kids Professional Training.

• Two 50-minute to one-hour in-person professional training and planning sessions with content designed to help educators implement the Squiggle Kids group drawing approach in the kindergarten.
• Two 50-minute to one-hour in-person group drawing activity sessions for up to 15 children on the same day co-presented by Squiggle Kids and the kindergarten professional team.

Optional upgrades (extra costs apply):

• Activity sessions for larger groups of children: Activity sessions for up to 22 children.
• Hybrid parent-child activity sessions: Parents attend the group drawing activity session and Squiggle Kids includes a presentation about drawing with children, including the latest research and learnings from clinical experience, hints on tools and other tips and tricks.

SK Parent Workshop and Resource package

A 60-90-minute in-person workshop for up to 30 adults that includes:

• a presentation about drawing with children by Squiggle Kids, including the latest research and learnings from clinical experience, and hands-on drawing activities demonstrating tools, tips and tricks
• a sample of drawing materials and tools and printed information for each attendee to take home.

SK Professional Training and Resource package

A 2-hour in person training session for up to 12 educators from the same kindergarten program that includes:

• a drawing activity designed for the educators to implement in the kindergarten, including materials and tools for the activity for up to 30 children (tools such as scissors, tape and glue not included)
• a presentation about drawing with children, including the latest research and learnings from clinical experience, and a hands-on component.

Some activities may also require the kindergarten to source recycled everyday items (e.g. pantry item boxes).

Optional upgrades (extra costs apply):

• PT Extension: Add a 1-hour group drawing session planning session for professionals, accommodate a larger group of professionals (over 12) or add a deep dive into additional drawing with children information as part of the training.
• Additional Materials: Additional materials and tools for the activity for additional children at the kindergarten service.

Participating services

In addition to the packages, Squiggle Kids can also supply participating services:

• Squiggle Kids Literacy Kits: a specially curated pack of drawing tools, materials and resources for parents/carers/children to take home.
• Squiggle Kids drawing story books: the supply of one or more Squiggle Kids activity books for use in a kindergarten setting, including sharing with kindergarten families. Each book includes a fun and engaging narrative and simple drawing prompts to encourage children to draw and to build confidence drawing.

These resources are only available to services participating in the packages offered by this provider.

Detailed cost

SK Incursion, Professional Training and Resource package

• $2,090 (including GST) for one incursion for up to 15 children and one 1-hour professional training session
• $1100 (including GST) for each subsequent incursion for groups of up to 15 children.

Includes all materials.

Optional upgrades:

• Activity sessions for larger groups of children: add $330 (including GST)
• Hybrid parent-child activity sessions: add $330 (including GST).

SK Collaborative Group Drawing Activity and Resource package

• $2970 (including GST) for 2 training and planning sessions for professionals and 2 group drawing activity sessions for up to 15 children co-presented by Squiggle Kids and the kindergarten professional team.
• $990 (including GST) for each subsequent planning session for professionals.
• $605 (including GST) for each subsequent activity session for up to 15 children co-presented by Squiggle Kids and the kindergarten professional team.

Includes paint sticks and large paper for use in the group drawing activity sessions. Some activities may require additional resources from the kindergarten.

Optional upgrades:

• Activity sessions for larger groups of children: add $330 (including GST)
• Hybrid parent-child activity sessions: add $330 (including GST).

SK Parent Workshop and Resource package

$1,750 (including GST) for a maximum group size of 30 adults. Includes all materials.

SK Professional Training and Resource package

• $1,850 (including GST) for a maximum group size of 12 educators
• Price includes materials for up to 30 children (tools such as scissors, tape and glue not included).

Some activities may also require the kindergarten to source recycled everyday items (e.g. pantry item boxes).

Optional upgrades:

• PT Extension: add $990 (including GST)
• Additional materials: add $6.60 (including GST) per additional child in the kindergarten.

Squiggle Kids Literacy Kits

$40 each (including GST). Alternative option: packs of paint sticks to take home.

$55 (including GST) for an electronic copy of one book. Discounts apply for purchase of packages of multiple books.

Additional costs

Additional costs may apply for:

• Travel: charges are calculated at $1 per kilometre from Surrey Hills (Victoria) to the service and back, multiplied by the number of trips to the service. No travel charge applies where the total travel is less than 25 km. In addition, kindergartens outside metro Melbourne (equal to or more than 65 kms from Surrey Hills), a once off charge of $400 (GST inclusive) also applies.
• Accommodation: charges apply where the booking involves more than one day out of Melbourne. Estimate $250 per night per presenter (minimum 2 presenters).

Implementation considerations

• Target population: children from 2 to 6 years old and their parents and educators.
• Program/practice descriptions and details: the DLLD program consists of interactive and hands-on incursions and workshops for parents/carers, children and educators. The presenter will demonstrate, through the use of book reading, songs and drawing, and using novel tools and materials, how to stimulate oral language, imaginative and social play.
• Program adaptability: Larger group sizes and kindergarten pooling can be explored. Online delivery of some packages can also be explored. Please contact the provider for options and pricing.
• Staffing: services should consider the cost of backfill in determining the cost of accessing the program (either online or face-to-face). For all packages, pre-meet time is required by educators to share information and organise dates/times, room set up with Squiggle Kids. For the Professional Training and Resource package, lead educator time commitment for training and set up is 3 hours. For the SK Incursion, Professional Training and Resource package, classroom educators are encouraged to take a hands-on role in incursions and, accordingly, extra staffing is encouraged. A commitment of 1 hour is needed for participating educators following a group drawing activity session for the professional training. For the SK Collaborative Group Drawing Activity and Resource package, 2 educators per classroom are encouraged to attend each session planning session (up to 2 hours total) and additional preparation and planning time will also be needed.
• Tools and systems: the program requires participants to have access to a device which can connect to the internet and receive emails.
