In 2014, the Victorian Auditor-General John Doyle formulated a Shared Services in Local Government report, which identified the increasing need for sharing of services and collaboration within local government.
As councils share many common responsibilities and carry out similar functions and activities, there are opportunities to jointly share knowledge, skills and expertise.
The benefits would include:
- cost reduction
- an increase of service quality
- the improvement of community outcomes.
Information is often shared inefficiently and generally within individual municipalities, so there is a large duplication of work and advice, which is often unnecessary.
Government Shared Services works exclusively with local government to implement shared service initiatives.
