Caitlin Syer - Victorian Disability Advisory Council Member

So, I play for the Mazenod all abilities footy club. We are all inclusive, all demographic club. We’ve got a range of different disabilities, we have great coaching staff, and we love to work together on-field, off-field, basically learn new skills and like developmental stuff.

So, I work as a Customer Service Representative at here at Monash Aquatic and Rec Centre as well as working in the Victorian Public Sector Reform Unit.

I feel like for me personally I can’t differentiate with my disability because there’s no representation of intellectual disability around. I want to be that change. I want to be that advocate for all the people that haven’t had a voice up until now. Women with disabilities are the most unrecognised group I’ve found in statistics. I would love to see that change and for people with disability to realise that we have a voice as well. People with intellectual disabilities always seem to be bundled together into one group.

My two things that I would like to contribute would be to an inclusive education for all people with intellectual disability mainly because I feel like that section needs to be fixed and that if we could get real education so that we can go into real employment that would be a big thing. The other thing I would like to do working on VDAC would be looking into companion cards because people with intellectual disability get so much overlooked on that as well.
