Victorian School Sports Awards 2022 – Nicholas

[Nicholas]

I learned to accept my losses the hard way and come back stronger and hungrier.

Losing is never the end of the world. Treat it like you're learning. That's what my dad taught me since day one.

My name is Nicholas and I'm a professional

table tennis player.

For me, it was always my dream to become a top international player. I knew this right at the beginning when I first started private coaching lessons, and as I got better, I received more opportunities to compete at international level. And now I've competed in my first Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, won my first two international singles titles, reached top 50 in the men's world ranking, and reached world number one in the under 17 singles.

What I love about table tennis is that it's such a complex sport. There are so many different aspects in the game, different types of bats attacking or defending, variation of spins, ball speeds, and serves. This motivates me to improve and be perfect in all those skills.

Being able to react to fast paced rallies, making split second decisions, and making

tiny adjustments after each shot. Are only just a few things that a table tennis player must do to win.

I'm excited to influence the next generation of young athletes by displaying good sportsmanship and positive attitudes whilst also expressing joy, enthusiasm, and passion. I hope to motivate and inspire others to be at their best.
