Program description

The Trauma Informed Early Childhood Training and Professional Conversations program is a 4-month intensive program created to support early childhood professionals to understand the complexities of children’s behaviour and trauma and how this closely connects with the learning and development of the children in their service.

The program includes an online training package designed for anyone supporting vulnerable children and families who have been exposed to trauma, and provides information required to engage traumatised children and provide them with the experiences they require to learn and develop.

The program will support early childhood professionals to engage in professional conversations and be mentored to critically reflect on what has been learnt in each module with support from a professional support consultant. The consultant will observe practice on 3 occasions in each kindergarten room to understand the service’s unique context and provide mentoring and guidance that is relevant to each of the training modules. The consultant will facilitate professional conversations using a 4-level framework to reflect, connect and draw out practice implications for their programs.

Detailed costs

Mentoring and facilitation (non-negotiable costs) $9,549 (excluding GST):

  • face-to-face professional conversation: 6 x $339 = $2,034
  • virtual professional conversation: 19 x $309 = $5,871
  • observational visits: 6 kindergarten rooms x $274 = $1,644 (2 hours per room for observation).

Variable costs & additions:

  • training course: $180 per person
  • travel and accommodation
  • additional costs if more than 30 participants (second facilitator to be present)
  • room hire if not available from service.

Implementation considerations

  • Program/practice descriptions and details: the program involves 25 hours of mixed mode (face-to-face and virtual) mentoring/facilitation of professional conversations, with a minimum of 6 hours of observational visits (dependent on the number of kindergarten rooms the service offers).
  • Program adaptability: the program is tailored specifically to meet the needs of the service. The program is flexible and can be adapted to the preferred style of delivery for the service.
  • Staffing: services should consider the cost of backfill when determining the cost of accessing this resource.
  • Training requirements: participants are required to have access to a computer with internet for the online training course.
