Emerging Leader

Anjali Sharma’s contribution to the Australian community and nation is an intersectional one. Her passion for climate justice goes beyond her concern for the environment and includes supporting First Nations people, racial equality, gender equality and marginalised communities.

By advocating for a vast range of issues as a 17-year-old, Anjali inspired many others to develop their vision for justice and give back to their community. Anjali’s passion is demonstrated through the various avenues she has taken to achieve justice. She was involved in School Strikes 4 Climate, mobilising 350,000 people in 2019. She has also engaged with local parliamentarians and community events to spread awareness for climate justice.

Most recently, Anjali has been the lead applicant in Sharma and others v Environment Minister - a class action claiming that the federal environment minister has a duty of care to protect young people from the future harms of climate change.

For her leadership and advocacy demonstrated in this case, Anjali was also a finalist in the 2021 Children's Climate Prize, an international prize for climate activism based in Sweden.
