Jorgie's story

CPEP - Jorgie Allen

Jorgie says she is extremely glad she ‘jumped on the chance’ to be involved in a paid placement program in the child protection space – a decision that has led to the start of a new and life changing career.

Jorgie had worked in education for 7 years – 5 as a teacher’s aide and 2 as a counsellor. Jorgie said helping children outside of the traditional teacher duties was a highlight for her, but she still wanted to do more.

So, when a family member who works in child protection suggested the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing’s Child Protection Employment Program (CPEP), Jorgie jumped at the chance.

‘As a school counsellor I could help kids, but once they left the office or school, that was it – I’d done all I could do.’

‘In the CPEP and my resulting employment, I was able to see another side of that world, where the help doesn’t stop – it continues until outcomes in the best interests of the child are achieved. No one wants child protection in their life. At times, it might just be that a family need help to get things back on track and thrive.’

The CPEP provides participants opportunities to learn about child protection in a structured and supportive environment, while working alongside experienced practitioners.

Jorgie completed the 12-week program in the Mallee region while studying her bachelor’s degree in social science majoring in behavioural studies.

‘After I finished the CPEP, my university studies were finished as well, and I was able to start in a full-time role.’

‘Once I received my transcript and successfully completed my degree, I became a full child protection practitioner. It was a bit daunting going into a new field with a new team at first. Although, familiar in a sense because in my education role, I’d made reports to child protection, but being on that side was a different kettle of fish. I stepped out of my comfort zone, and it’s been amazing – I’m so glad I did it.’

Jorgie said standout moments from the CPEP included soaking up a lot of new information about the child protection service and having the opportunity to work alongside the child protection team in the Mallee region.
