In 1999, she became Director General of the Library, the first woman to be appointed to the position. Jan was the driving force behind the Library's development of the PANDORA Archive of Australian Digital Publications, and has continued to inspire the Library's work in this area.

Under her leadership, the Library is now embarking on a series of new digital initiatives including the Picture Australia service and a major new digitisation program. Jan was recently elected Chair of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries. This is the first time that this prestigious position has been held by an Australian.
