Head Start Apprenticeships and Traineeships

This video is a compilation of short interviews with young women in the Head Start apprenticeship and traineeship program.

Speaker 1

I'm pretty little. So, it's quite hard to find shorts and pants that fit.

We see the young woman undertaking a variety of tasks on a ladder.

Speaker 1

Because the women's range is pretty small. I’ve got the smaller size in everything.

We then meet the second young woman working with a male tradesperson on an electronic power board.

Speaker 2

I'm so happy that there are more opportunities for women to work in male dominated areas.

In the next scene, the first young woman is working with two male tradespersons in the internal sections of a room being constructed. They are having a discussion about the work involved. In another scene, she climbs up a ladder to fix wiring while a supervisor looks on.

Speaker 1

A lot of women going into a male dominated industry will have a few concerns, you know, just might be the only woman there. But yeah, it's not as daunting as it seems.

The second young woman looks on as a colleague fixes a component on a piece of machinery.

Speaker 2

Head Start helps make sure that you're in a positive environment.

A fourth young women walks through a workshop.

In the next scene, a group of workers are gathered in the workshop to have a discussion. After that, the fourth young woman stands in front of equipment with another worker, smiling and laughing.

Speaker 3

Like people think guys are scary, but they're actually not scary. They’re pretty funny. The guys are just like, now we need more females in the industry. So, it’s pretty good.

In the next few scenes, a fourth young woman works in a auto workshop, picking up a tyre to fit onto a car. We also see her working under the car body. In the last scene where she speaks, she is putting air into a tyre.

Speaker 4

The guys here, believe me, they've given me way more respect than I feel like I deserve and they trust me to service my own cars by myself now.

As the fifth young woman speaks, we see her working on a farm with a calf. In the next scene, she is accompanied by another worker, getting feed from a machine.

Speaker 5

A lot of people can say some pretty nasty things about women in trade, but I just say, block that out and just keep going.

The other young woman in the previous scene starts speaking in a voice over as we see both of them look over a paddock filled with cattle.

Speaker 6

I would definitely recommend the Head Start program to any young woman even thinking about getting out to the workforce in a trade or agriculture. You get to do what you love.

The next two scenes feature the second and third young women walking through different work sites. We then return to the first young woman as she fixes a power supply.

Speaker 1

Definitely just go for it. Yeah, it's a great program to go through. You know, just give it a shot.
