Expedition Camps

We fade from black screen to open from above looking down into a remote, regional campground beside the Murray River in Victoria. As the camera moves slowly above the trees we can see tents dotted below in blue and green as well as a number of 4WD vehicles beside the white sandy tracks.

We hear a female voice over the image.

Female camp leader voiceover: Yeah we’re camped right here by the river, which is very nice.

The camera continues to move to show the edge of the river before a cross fade takes us down to ground level as we track forward and pan across three green tents with the river in the background.

We hear the same female voice over this image before we cut to see her in a medium close up, talking directly to camera with the wide expanse of the Murray River in the background. She is in a long-sleeved blue collared shirt and wears an orange cap.

Female camp leader to camera: These camps are all about building our leadership skills.

We cross-fade to see a group of six campers walking with full backpacks, walking down a steeply sloped track, obviously heading somewhere on a bush walk. The next shot shows the flicker of light through the trees from the late afternoon sun as the camera follows the group from behind. We cut to see two campers working together unfolding a tent, preparing to set it up, the sun low in the background behind the trees and their backs. During this segment we hear the female camp leader throughout.

Female camp leader voiceover: We have…done a little bit of a hike…to a new camping spot.

We cut to see a medium close up shot of a male camp leader. It is similar to the previous shot of the female and shows him sitting under some gum trees with the Murray River behind him. He has a silver nose ring and wears a dark blue beanie and a warm grey jacket top with zip up dark blue collar.

Male camp leader voiceover: Currently we’re on an eight day journey…down the Murray River.

We cut to see about 12 people walking away from camera, along the wide watery, sandy flats of the river.

[Sounds of indigenous birds including Cockatoos and Corellas, provides atmosphere].

We cut to see a shot from the river’s edge showing the expedition campers practicing their canoe strokes standing up in a large group. We hear a new male voice over the top of the shot.

Male (2) student voiceover: Yeah we’ve been learning how to do paddle strokes…

We cut to a wide shot from the water (from a canoe) showing three canoes, each with two rowers in safety gear and hats. A blue canoe is closest to camera and moves past us on the left of screen. Two red canoes are ahead.

We cut to see a medium close up of the male student. He is early twenties, wearing a sky blue collared zip up top and has dark hair and brown eyes.

Male (2) student to camera: And umm, how to use the canoe…

A quick shot from the river shows the female camp leader and another camper canoeing closely past camera with others in canoes in the background.

We cut to see a side close up of a smiling male camp goer in a lifejacket standing in the campground. He has a dark bushy beard and a blue floppy brimmed hat. Another male is behind him out of focus also wearing putting on lifejacket. We cross fade and pan to the left to see the female camp leader in a lifejacket, holding a paddle in one hand. She waves and smiles at camera. We cross fade to show a wide shot in the low light of evening twilight as the campers sit in a wide circle around an outdoor fire and prepare their evening meals to cook. We cut to a shot a little further back showing the same scene but wider, with green tents and canoes in the background while the fire roars in the centre of the circle. During this package of shots, we hear the make camp leader.

Male (1) camp leader voiceover: I think outdoor education trips attract a whole bunch of people…I think it’s a pretty unique subject in that way that, you know, I think you’ll meet people you wouldn’t normally meet in everyday life.

We cut to day and the female camp leader in the same position as previously as she talks to camera beside the river.

Female camp leader to camera: We’ve seen plenty of wildlife around here…

We cut to day and the male camp leader in the same position as previously. He is also discussing the wildlife and gestures off camera with his hand.

Male (1) camp leader to camera: …specifically things like that Koala just there, that’s crawling towards us…

The camera quickly leaves the male camp leader and twists around to see a Koala running along the ground towards us, before leaving onto the trunk of a tree a couple of meters away. We cut too see a close up of the very healthy and ridiculously cute-looking Koala holding tightly to the trunk and looking directly at camera.  It seems happy that it appeared right on cue!

Male (1) camp leader voiceover (laughing): You can’t compete with that kind of cuteness.

We cut to see a sweeping wide shot from above the river looking down to the river bank where the expedition group is in a circle, all holding paddles, with the colorful red, yellow and blue canoes lined up just at the water’s edge. We cut to see the group from the ground level of the river bank, directly in front of us in a circle going through the plan ahead of hitting the water.  A shot from above the river shows the campers practicing their strokes, before a cross fade takes us to their perspective on the water as the camera drifts backwards and they canoe very closely past us. During this canoeing package the male student camper discusses more of the benefits of expedition camps.

Male (2) student voiceover: There’s a lot less distractions out in the bush…getting push notifications in your face..out here you don’t have any of that. Yeah, just away from technology is so good for your brain.

A wide overhead shot of the Murray now shows a thin line of four canoes heading up river with dense large river gums lining both sides of this epic waterway.

Female camp leader voiceover: Some students aren’t so confident about going into the bush…

Male (2) student voiceover: But then they just grow with it.

We cut to see the make student again, in the same position as he was previously.

Male (2) student to camera: And umm, they learn a lot…

We cut to an overhead shot of the silty yellow river, looking directly down at eight canoes forming a striking star pattern over the water. We cut to the perspective of one of the canoes and pan right to left to see that all canoeists are holding onto each others canoes on their left and right, connecting the group as they float down the river as one.

Male (1) camp leader VoiceOver: It’s all about connecting people to the outdoors, burning people back to experiencing nature firsthand.

We cut to a ground level shot amongst the group in a forest of gums. A female in the group is pointing up at something and consequently, everyone is looking upwards. We cross fade to a left to right panning shot, way up in the treetops. We slowly pass a koala which sits comfortably on a branch in its natural home in the trees, looking down curiously at the group below.

[Sounds of indigenous birds add to the music]

The koala shot fades to a wide overhead sunset shot of the thickly forested Murray River landscape ahead of nightfall. The last rays of sun flare into the camera lens.
