A Day in the Life of… Emily: A Specialist Family Violence Practitioner

0:00

My name is Emily.

0:01

I'm a Senior Specialist Family Violence Practitioner working in the family violence sector.

0:10

This is the beginning stage of a client's journey, and my role is to ensure

0:14

that they are receiving the appropriate service relevant to their needs.

0:19

So it's about critically thinking, problem solving

0:23

and analysing the presenting factors to best determine the support needs.

0:32

I studied a Bachelor of Arts

0:35

and I majored in psychology and criminology.

0:38

Once I completed my degree, I then went into crisis accommodation.

0:43

I was working with victim survivors who were homeless

0:47

as a result of family violence.

0:51

We rely on our colleagues every day in order to make assessments.

0:55

So that looks like having secondary consults, discussing the circumstances

1:00

in the referral to determine the best practice for the specific referral.

1:06

We may potentially need advice on the presenting factors

1:09

in order to determine how to best assist the family or individual.

1:15

Given that I've had the experience of working in case management, it's

1:18

allowed me to not only assess client's potential support needs,

1:23

but also determine whether there might be a need

1:26

for ongoing long term case management.

1:29

I've found a passion for working

1:31

with the culturally and linguistically diverse communities

1:35

and really supporting them to have agency

1:38

and have a say that they may not have because they don't have the confidence

1:43

or the language barriers in order to access supports.

1:49

It's encouraging knowing that we're working within a field in a sector

1:53

that is progressive and is that there is a motivation

1:57

for change to ensure that there we’re better supporting the community.
