Led by the Conservation Regulator as part of Taskforce Ironbark, and supported by Parks Victoria and Victoria Police, the operation targets black market operators illegally cutting down and taking trees from Victoria’s forests. It aims to protect Victoria’s forests and parks from environmental harm caused by these blackmarket commercial firewood operators.
The operation focused on the Glen Park State Forest, north of Ballarat, following community reports of suspicious activity. Intelligence gathering by the Conservation Regulator identified large-scale removal of timber by several people of interest, which was allegedly being sold for firewood. Many of the trees targeted were large, dead specimens that provide critical habitat for our native wildlife, such as Powerful Owls. Reports also indicated trees were being partially cut and left standing, posing safety risks to forest users.
On 5 August, Conservation Regulator Forest and Wildlife Officers, along with Victoria Police, intercepted two individuals actively removing firewood. Officers seized:
- A trailer loaded with firewood
- Two chainsaws
- Block splitters.
Victoria Police also impounded a vehicle under the Road Safety Act 1986, discovering that the driver had allegedly been operating it on a suspended licence. The investigation is ongoing.
This operation highlights the importance of community reporting and inter-agency collaboration in protecting Victoria’s forests and parks. Members of the public who observe suspicious firewood activity are urged to call 136 186. Reports can be made anonymously. 'The message to black market firewood operators is clear: if you’re caught illegally removing timber from public land for commercial gain, you will be held accountable. This includes significant fines, facing prosecution, and the loss of vehicles and equipment. We will not tolerate the exploitation of Victoria’s forests and parks.'
