Wildlife Offence - Portland Crime Stoppers Victoria

The Conservation Regulator is seeking public assistance after an incident involving the alleged take of an Australian Fur Seal pup, later found alive in a bin at the Portland RSL Sub-Branch on Tuesday 30 September.

The Australian Fur Seal pup was transferred to Zoos Victoria Marine Response Unit for veterinary assessment.

Seals and other marine mammals are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. It is illegal to take, be in possession of, feed or touch seals as this can affect the health and safety of the seal and individuals.

Anyone with information relating to this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000. You can report anonymously.

If you come across a seal

  • Do not approach within 30 metres of a seal on land.
  • Dogs are not permitted within 50 metres of a seal on land or in the water.
  • Do not approach within 5 metres of a seal on a boat ramp, pier, jetty or other infrastructure.
  • Do not approach on a vessel within 30 metres of a seal haul out site. If you are swimming, do not approach within 5 metres of a haul out site.
