Investigation into alleged koala cruelty at Koroit

A Koroit man has been arrested and interviewed over allegations of significant wildlife cruelty at Koroit.

The Conservation Regulator, along with Victoria Police, is investigating an incident in which a vehicle was allegedly used to drag a koala along roadway in Koroit.

The incident is believed to have taken place at around 5 pm on Wednesday 25 March, as the vehicle drove through the area including along King St.

The koala was left with serious injuries at Victoria Park, before being found by a member of the public and assessed by a vet. Due the severity of its injuries, the koala was euthanised.

Victoria Police arrested a man in Warrnambool yesterday in relation to the incident.

Conservation Regulator investigators interviewed the 67-year-old in relation to wildlife cruelty offences. The man has been released and is expected to be charged on summons.

All wildlife in Victoria is protected. It is illegal to harm wildlife under the Wildlife Act 1975 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986.

An offence of aggravated cruelty carries a maximum penalty of up to $101,000 and two years imprisonment.

The Conservation Regulator is continuing to work with Victoria Police as the investigation progresses.
