About Workforce Inspectorate Victoria

We promote and enforce Victoria’s long service leave, child employment, owner driver and forestry contractor laws.

Workforce Inspectorate Victoria receives and refers complaints related to Victorian Government construction projects and promotes and enforces Victoria’s;

  • child employment laws
  • long service leave entitlements
  • owner driver, forestry contractor, hirer and freight broker obligations.

What we do

  • Receives and refers complaints related to Victorian Government construction projects.
  • Give practical advice, information and support to employees and employers.
  • Conduct targeted information campaigns.
  • Investigate complaints.
  • Carry out a range of enforcement functions to ensure the laws are being followed.
  • Work with other government agencies to ensure fair employment conditions. This includes the Victorian Labour Hire Authority, which operates a licensing system for labour hire businesses operating in Victoria.

Our vision is to create productive and prosperous workplaces for all Victorians. That means fairer conditions for workers and a level playing field for businesses.

Our Commissioner

Robert Hortle was appointed Commissioner of Wage Inspectorate Victoria for a 5-year term on 17 June 2021. (Wage Inspectorate Victoria was renamed Workforce Inspectorate Victoria on 12 December 2025).

Under the Workforce Inspectorate Act 2025, Robert is responsible for exercising the duties, functions and powers of the Workforce Inspectorate under the legislation it enforces.
