What ATAR you need to study teaching

The minimum Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) for direct entry to a teaching degree for school leavers is 70. All entrants to teaching degrees will also need to pass the relevant teaching degree provider’s personal attributes assessment.

In addition, all new teachers are required to meet literacy and numeracy standards as a national requirement for graduation from teaching degrees.

The costs involved in studying teaching

If you enrol in a Commonwealth Supported Place in a teaching degree, you may be eligible for HECS-HELP loan, to pay for your studies.

The cost of studying a teaching degree is set by the individual degree provider and can vary each year. To find out the exact cost of each teaching degree we recommend contacting the degree provider faculty of education directly.

Scholarships for people enrolling in secondary school teaching degrees

Every Victorian who enrols in a Victorian secondary school teaching degree in 2024 or 2025 will be eligible for a scholarship that pays them while they learn.

The Victorian Government is providing $93.2 million to support teaching degree students with the cost of studying and living. The scholarships are available to all Victorian students (including Victoria-based permanent residents) who enrol in Victorian secondary school teaching degrees in 2024 and 2025, with further payments if they work in Victorian government secondary or specialist school settings after they graduate.

Total scholarship payments for students who complete their studies successfully and then teach in a Victorian government secondary or specialist school setting for 2 years will match the standard HELP fees charged by the Commonwealth Government.
