Support for damaged homes

If your home was damaged by the 2023-24 Victorian storms and floods and is not covered by insurance, support is available.

This page is for people affected by the December 2023-January 2024 Victorian storms and floods.

If you need it, recovery support is also available for the February 2024 Victorian storms and February 2024 Western Victorian bushfires.

If your home was damaged

If you don’t have insurance, we can assess your home for damage caused by the storms or floods. This is called an ‘all-hazards assessment’.

After the assessment, you will get a report with information about:

  • damage caused by the flood or storm, including whether your home is dangerous to live in or use
  • hazards like asbestos or electrical dangers
  • whether your home is eligible for demolition or if the hazards can be removed for free.

There is no obligation to act on any of the recommendations in the report you receive.

If there are hazards

If the assessment finds hazards, we might be able to remove them for free. This means that you could safely start any repairs you might need.

Making your home safe to enter does not include cosmetic repairs. After the hazards have been removed, you might need to organise tradespeople to make your home suitable to live in.

If there is extensive damage

If your home has extensive flood or storm damage, we can demolish the building for free. This means that you can focus your efforts and resources on rebuilding.

Who can get an all-hazards assessment

You can get an all-hazards assessment if:

  • your home or rental property was affected by the 2023-24 Victorian storms and floods (24 December 2023 to January 2024)
  • you live in the home, or you had tenants living there with a formal rental agreement in place
  • you don’t have flood insurance, or you are under-insured for flood
  • the property you want us to assess is in an eligible council area

Register for an all-hazards assessment

Fill out the form below or call the Emergency Recovery Hotline on 1800 560 760 to register.

Support can be as simple as connecting you with existing services. This could be financial, legal, and physical or mental health support. They can also tell you about any specific recovery programs that are available.

For example, a tree is unstable and may fall on your house.
