This page explains what happens after you make an FOI request.
If you want to make a request, see Making an FOI request.
What happens after you submit a request
Once we receive your request:
- we confirm we have received it
- we may contact you to clarify or narrow your request
- we search for relevant documents
- we assess whether the documents, or parts of them, can be released
- we send you a written decision.
Timeframes
We aim to respond within 30 days.
This timeframe may be extended if:
- your request is complex
- we need to consult with third parties
- we need more information from you.
We will let you know if the timeframe changes.
Fees and charges
An application fee of $33.60 as at 1 July 2025 applies and is non-refundable. The fee is indexed annually on 1 July.
Additional charges may apply for:
- searching for documents
- retrieving documents
- copying documents.
We will tell you about any extra charges before continuing.
When documents cannot be released
Not all documents can be released. We may refuse access, or provide partial access, if documents:
- affect another person’s privacy
- are commercially sensitive
- relate to law enforcement
- are Cabinet or certain internal documents.
Each request is assessed individually.
If you disagree with a decision
If you are not satisfied with the outcome, you can request a review.
You can apply to the Victorian Information Commissioner, at The FOI review process.
We will explain your review rights in our decision letter.
Accessing information without FOI
We publish a large amount of information that you can access without making an FOI request.
For more detail, see Information available from the Department (FOI).
