A great education for every child and young person – so they can thrive now, and in the future, for a fairer, smarter, and more prosperous state.
Our vision is aligned to the principles of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006(opens in a new window).
The Act states that all Victorians should have access to a high-quality education, regardless of:
- the education or training institution they attend
- where they live
- their social or economic circumstances.
A high-quality education should:
- help learners reach their full potential and achieve their educational goals
- build a lifelong love of learning
- allow parents to play an active role in their child's education.
What we do
We are responsible for early childhood and school education in Victoria. This is through a wide range of learning and development services and support.
We provide policy leadership and plan for the future of education in Victoria. We also collaborate across the sectors.
We play an important system steward role. We provide support, guidance, oversight and assurance across early childhood and school education systems. We also provide school education and early learning.

Our strategic direction and planned outcomes
Our Strategic Plan(opens in a new window) sets out the department’s direction, planned outcomes, and strategies for delivering the Victorian Government's education priorities. The Strategic Plan is updated yearly.
