Held from 17 to 18 July 2024, the AEN conference was well received by more than 50 senior managers and industry leaders, who had the opportunity to learn more about the Victorian labour market, the future of the Victorian workforce and the crucial role apprenticeships play in shaping it.
Representing the VSA was team leader engagement for North and West Victoria, Martin Collins, who gave a keynote presentation titled Victoria’s skills needs – a look ahead.
Martin presented important data and information that can be used for strategic planning to support apprentices, including:
- the growing demand for skills in sectors such as healthcare, technology, construction and renewable energy, and why apprenticeships and traineeships in these areas can play a crucial role in meeting future workforce needs
- how to access localised data to support planning across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria
- how the government promotes diversity in apprenticeships to attract more women into trades and provide a fairer future for First Nations peoples through the Victorian Self-Determination Reform Framework
- how the VSA’s annual Victorian Skills Plan underpins the state’s skills roadmap to help TAFEs and other training providers like the AEN plan for courses and ensure industries have the workers they need.

The positive response to Martin’s presentation demonstrates that the research and data produced by the VSA is highly regarded, trusted and invaluable to help training organisations plan, and to ensure the state has the skills it needs to drive economic development and social prosperity for all Victorians.
During the conference, attendees also had the opportunity to visit the VSA stand where Martin and colleague Kate Storer were kept busy answering questions and sharing copies of the Victorian Skills Plan and the Implementation Update.
The VSA is pleased to support the AEN through the conference gold sponsorship, and in November 2024 will also sponsor the Trainee of the Year Award, to be presented at the AEN’s Apprentice Training Awards(opens in a new window) gala dinner.
