An industry view of Victorian skill needs in 2012
The ITAB Market Effectiveness Report is an annual report prepared by a consultant on behalf of the Higher Education and Skills Group (HESG).
It provides industry advice on training market successes and failures, a labour market outlook and an analysis of skills need at the industry level, including occupations in demand and critical skills shortages for each of the sixteen Industry Training Advisory Body (ITAB) industry groupings in Victoria.
The report forecasts that the Victorian economy will record modest employment growth of 0.8 per cent in 2012, the slowest growth in over a decade.
Unemployment is forecast to rise to 5.6 per cent in 2012, up from 5.1 per cent in 2011.
Overall, ITABs listed 171 occupations as being in demand across the 16 industries. Of these, 78 were also categorised as experiencing a critical skill shortage. The major critical skill shortage areas include:
- Traditional trades occupations in automotive, engineering, electrotechnology and communications, hospitality, furnishing and textile, clothing and footwear
- Nursing, aged care, child protection, children’s services and community services
- Accounting, project managers, building surveyors and estimators, retail, hotel and restaurant managers
- Animal technicians, arborists, and agronomists
- Heavy vehicle drivers, bus and train drivers.
