Learn Local Learning for Work

Learn Local learning for work activities will expose learners to real-world contexts and continue to contextualise and embed foundation skills learnt in class.

The ACFE Board actively supports Learn Locals to offer learning for work activities and encourages training providers to deliver Learn Local courses where adult learners can safely apply their foundation skills in real world work contexts.

Learning for work activities can be conducted at a Learn Local or at an employer-hosted workplace where supervised by a Learn Local trainer. These activities are intended to occur alongside pre-accredited training to help prepare learners for the world of work or future accredited training.

The purpose of Learn Local learning for work activities is to:

  • enable learners to apply and build on language, literacy, numeracy, employability and digital skills contextualised to certain industries and workplaces
  • educate adult learners about local growth industries and pathways
  • expose learners to a range of job pathways to solidify their personal career aspirations
  • challenge pre conceived ideas about workplaces
  • build learner preparedness to enter the workforce through understanding host employer expectations and acquaint themselves with the work environment
  • assist adult learners to become more fully informed about aspirations and work interests
  • prepare adult learners for more intensive, practical placements in accredited courses.

The Learn Local Learning for Work guidelines have been developed to ensure the learning for work activities are appropriate, safe, easily administered and relevant for adult learners, providers and industry.

These guidelines provide a framework whereby Learn Local Learning for Work:

  • can better support pathways to accredited training and employment
  • can expose adult learners to real local industry opportunities and career options
  • can provide insight into industry-specific skill requirements
  • is a safe and supported platform for adult learners to observe workplace norms
  • can build learner understanding of key employability skills
  • can provide further context for a learner’s pre-accredited course of study.

The Learn Local Learning for Work guidelines and associated templates are available for Learn Locals to access and use, on the Learn Local Secure Portal.
