Vehicular Site Access (Crossovers)

Find out about crossovers, an accessway/driveway allowing access from a property onto the road.

Vehicular Site Access (Crossovers)

What is vehicular site access?

Vehicular site access (also referred to as a crossover) is considered the connection of an accessway (ie. driveway) to the road. Access generally extends from the edge of the property boundary within the road reserve to the road. In Metropolitan areas, they will often cross a footpath, nature strip or kerb to provide access to the road.

Vehicular site access vs an accessway

An accessway relates to the path used to approach the road from within a property boundary. The accessway only relates to what is happening within property boundaries and not within the road reserve.

An accessway is also often referred to as a driveway.

When assessing applications for new or altered access, DTP Officers on behalf of the Head, TfV may consider the following factors (among others):

  • How vehicles enter and exit the site (including the ability to exit in a forward direction) The proposed crossover design
  • Types of vehicles and traffic generated by the proposal
  • Existing road conditions and transport related infrastructure
  • Impact to safety and efficiency of the State Transport System
  • Any additional works that might be required to ensure the proposed access and State Transport System operate safely and efficiently
