As a natural extension to Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD), Docklands is home to many international and domestic corporations from sectors including:

Where is Docklands?

Docklands is located directly west of Melbourne’s CBD and is serviced by multiple transport modes including tram, train, bus and ferry. This includes Southern Cross Station and eight tram lines.

Docklands in future

Construction of Docklands commenced in 1997 and was originally anticipated to be completed in 2025. Docklands will continue to evolve with re-master planning underway for some precincts.

To date, Docklands has:

  • Achieved urban renewal through strong partnerships with private developers, the State Government and the City of Melbourne
  • Attracted $14.6 billion of private investment
  • Become home to more than 17,500 residents and 73,000 workers
  • Sustained 2,500 to 3,000 construction jobs annually
  • Constructed 10,000 apartments and more than 1 million square metres of commercial space (including currently under construction)
  • Become home to some of Australia’s largest companies including ANZ, NAB, Medibank Private, and Myer
  • Become home to Marvel Stadium and the waterfront - a world-class sporting and entertainment destination
  • Displayed 68 pieces of public art
  • Created almost 11 hectares of parks and open space

Life in this precinct


Through its continuing maturity, Docklands has sustained 2,500 to 3,000 construction jobs annually, and is home to 73,000 workers. New employment opportunities will continue to arise. Its proximity to other developing precincts, such as Fishermans Bend and Parkville, will continue to drive economic outcomes that create more jobs.
