We are committed to providing a working environment that ensures the health, safety and wellbeing of our people, customers and the community. This includes psychological safety.

We support health and safety outcomes for all, which includes complying with relevant health and safety laws (including the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004(opens in a new window) and its associated regulatory codes).

Balance work and life commitments

The nature and scope of flexible and hybrid work options will depend on the requirements of each position.

Flexible work arrangements

In accordance with the VPS Flexible Work Policy(opens in a new window), our approach to flexible working is designed to support our people who want to work in a more flexible way and enable managers to lead and support their teams.

Flexible working includes arrangements such as:

  • a change in working days or hours (e.g. moving to part time)
  • increase or decrease in total hours worked
  • request for compressed working arrangements e.g. a nine-day fortnight.

In consultation between manager and employee, flexible work arrangements can be agreed to balance personal requirements with the needs and obligations of colleagues and the department.

Hybrid working

We know that effective hybrid working environments enable productivity, connection, and better work-life balance.

Hybrid work is when people deliver work from a mix of home and DTP workplaces. While anyone can choose to work from a DTP workplace full time, our people generally prefer a mix of home and office-based working.

Our expectation is for our people to work from a DTP location at least three days a week for full time employees. Flexible working arrangements and workplace adjustments can be made on a case-by-case basis.

Career pathways and learning and development

We have a range of personal and professional development programs designed to develop our people and their careers.

We encourage and support our people to pursue careers within the department. We provide internal and external learning and development opportunities to support on the job performance and progress careers.

We support relevant study via negotiated financial assistance and study leave for approved courses.

Working where the need is

Work within the Victorian Public Sector is always changing, for reasons like:

  • population growth
  • new government priorities
  • the pace and scale of technological advancement
  • changing community service delivery expectations
  • the need to respond to evolving complex public policy problems or crises.

Providing secure and flexible public service employment includes embracing these changing priorities and the career and development opportunities that they may present. This may include employee deployment to support this work.

We may exercise our rights under s.31A of the Public Administration Act 2004 (Vic)(opens in a new window) and the Victorian Public Service Enterprise Agreement 2024(opens in a new window) to deploy our people to support changing government priorities.

Emergency response opportunities

We play a major role in Victoria’s emergency response activities, management of biosecurity threats and compliance actions. Employees can be directly employed for these roles or may be called upon to support these activities as required following appropriate training and suitability assessment.

Enterprise Agreements

As part of the Victorian Public Service, all DTP employees operate under the provisions of the Public Administration Act 2004. Most DTP employees are covered by the Victorian Public Service Enterprise Agreement 2024(opens in a new window) which sets out all terms and conditions of employment and the Code of Conduct for Victorian Public Sector Employees which outlines the public sector values.
