Melbourne Train Refranchising (MR5)

We are calling on the most experienced transport operators from around the world to bid for the next contract to run Melbourne’s train network, commencing in late-2027.

The MR5 train franchisee will operate and maintain Melbourne’s metropolitan rail network, providing over 2,000 daily services across over 1,000 kilometres of track.

With an evolving fleet, seven train maintenance depots, more than 220 stations and nearly 7000 employees, the franchisee will deliver a world class customer experience that connects residents and visitors alike, linking seamlessly with the world's largest tram network, regional rail services, bus routes, and airport connections.

The MR5 Train refranchise is an opportunity to raise the bar and deliver better outcomes for customers.
