Melton Electrification Project

The project is supported by a $152.7m investment from the Victorian and Australian governments to finalise the designs, scope and costs to inform future delivery of the Melton line electrification.

The work is being undertaken by Department of Transport and Planning and Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority.

This funding will progress:

  • site investigations
  • environmental assessments
  • planning approvals
  • secure power supply for the future electrified line
  • detailed design and costing with delivery partners.

Works on the Melton Line Upgrade will feature platform extensions and the building of additional stabling capacity for metropolitan trains at Cobblebank.

These works will enable nine-car trains on the Melton Line in 2027, boosting peak service capacity by 50 per cent.

Electrification will enable more trains to run along the Melton corridor and allow our regional VLocity fleet to be redeployed to other high demand corridors.

The new Melton Station will open soon, featuring four platforms, two for metropolitan services and two for regional services, as part of the level crossing removal on the Melton Line.

Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 is enabling Melton Line electrification and transforming Sunshine Station into a superhub for over 1,000 daily trains each day.

Development works are expected to begin this year, and this phase of work will also inform future funding decisions about constructing the electrification project.
