The history of Cape Bridgewater State School

  • 1862

Cape Bridgewater opened as a common school in 1862. Classes were held in the room of a private house.

There were 13 girls and 10 boys enrolled. The first head teacher was Simon H. Higgens.

The average attendance over the year was 16 students.

  • 1863

The number of students grew to 26 so it was decided to build a schoolhouse.

  • 1866

By 1866 the new sandstone schoolhouse had been built. It had a classroom, three rooms for the head teacher, and a wash house.

  • 1870s

The school became a state school at some stage between 1873 and 1878.

The average attendance had grown to 40 students by 1874.

  • 1895

The school had low student numbers so it became a part-time school with Trewalla State School (No. 2836). It shared its only teacher with Trewalla and the teacher split their time between both schools.

  • 1898

The school closed in 1898 for 12 years.

  • 1910

Cape Bridgewater was re-opened in 1910 part-time with Bridgewater State School (No. 32). It shared its only teacher with Bridgewater and the teacher split their time between both schools.

It is not known when it closed.
